Bulgaria upset two-time world champions Brazil 25-18, 25-20, 25-20 on Saturday to finsh top of a tough pool which also includes Poland.

Bulgaria and Brazil have already secured the third-round spots and the match simply determined the standings of their pool.

Tsvetan Sokolov landed 15 points on 13 spikes and two aces for Bulgaria, and Valentin Bratoev added 12 points for the victory. Brazil captain Giba recorded a team-high eight points, while Leandro Vissotto and Rodrigo scored seven points each.

Knowing a spot in the third round was assured, both teams altered their starting lineups from their respective first match of Pool N.

Bulgaria snapped a five-match losing streak to Brazil, including four losses in this year's FIVB World League. Brazil still holds a commanding 25-13 all-time record against Bulgaria.

But for Brazil, the statistics counts little compared with their tournament strategy.

"For us the real tournament will start next Monday," said Giba. "In regards to what happened tonight, I have no words. We decided to let our setter take a rest because he has to do his best next week."

"I'm sorry for the crowd. It could happen to any team to have a black spot in their career. Our way to act is the same as all the other teams. And this tournament has been characterized by strategy," he said.

Bernardo Rezende, Brazil head coach, expressed the same. "We had some players with physical problems and we must be ready for Monday's match. I'm sorry for the fans," he said.

Brazil will play against the Czech Republic and Germany in the third round, while Italy, who beat Puerto Rico 3-1 on Saturday, will host the United States and France.

Serbia, who routed Mexico 3-0 on Saturday, are expected to have a tough group against Russia and Argentina. Bulgaria will have to be wary of the anticipated ambushes from Spain and Cuba on their way to the semifinals.
