A Paris prosecutor is investigating whether members of the Astana cycling team committed doping violations at the 2009 Tour de France, the French newspaper Le Monde reported on Wednesday.

Le Monde said that French officials found in October syringes and other suspicious medical equipment used in infusions among medical waste at the 2009 Tour, and that they now believed that the items belonged to Astana.

As a result of the findings, the Astana sporting director as well as team doctors and riders will likely be questioned by investigators.

The Kazakh Astana team dominated the 2009 Tour de France, as Alberto Contador won the race, and Lance Armstrong finished third in the final standings and Astana won the team competition as well.

Armstong announced his return to the sport last year and left Astana to form a new team, Team Radio Shack, after the 2009 Tour. Contador remains with the team pending resolution of its financial problems.
