Sailing Preview: Medal prospects start to show
Adjust font size:

For Paralympic Sailing, five races have been completed in each class and no races are scheduled for Wednesday, September 10. Racing will resume at noon on Thursday, September 11 in Qingdao.

2.4mR (1-Person Keelboat)

John Ruf of the United States has closed the gap on Paul Tingley of Canada, who now only has a one-point lead over the American.

Heiko Kroger (Germany), Damien Seguin (France), Jens Als Andersen (Denmark) and Thierry Schmitter (Netherlands), familiar names from Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004, are starting to dominate the top of the scoreboard.

Anyone who makes a call on who will medal is a risk taker - this series is by no means near an end.

SKUD 18 (2-Person Keelboat)

Although they are medal favorites, US athletes Nick Scandone and Maureen Mckinnon Tucker need to stay alert with Daniel Fitzgibbon and Rachel Cox of Australia and John Mcroberts and Stacie Louttit of Canada hard on their heels just waiting for their opportunity to strike.

The top three are going to be hard to beat. The third placed Canadians' nearest rivals, Jia Hailiang and Yang Xiujuan of China, are seven points behind and will need to pull something out of the bag soon if they are to get back in the running.

British duo Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell have shown moments of brilliance but are currently in sixth place so need to lift the bar on Thursday to be in medal contention.

Sonar (3-Person Keelboat)

Fans are awaiting the verdicts on four protests that are being heard in the Sonar class on Tuesday evening. The results may affect the scoring, especially at the top of the fleet.

Bruno Jourdren, Herve Larhant and Nicolas Vimont-Vicary (France) have a healthy lead over Colin Harrison, Russell Boaden and Graeme Martin (Australia).

The Australians must be feeling pretty upbeat given their consistent 2, 3, 3 performance on Tuesday.
