Closer bilateral ties

The significance of Sunday's grand celebrations commemorating the 65th anniversary of the end of the Russian Great Patriotic War is more than symbolic.

It shows that the world will remember forever the huge sacrifices and indelible contributions that the Soviet army and people made to safeguard national sovereignty and achieve victory against Fascism.

Only by taking history as a mirror can we make greater efforts to safeguard the hard-won peace and have a better vision for the future development of mankind.

On China's part, the Chinese people will never forget the important assistance provided by the Soviet Red Army in its ultimate victory against Japanese aggressors during the war.

Despite the vicissitudes of times, China-Russia friendship, forged in the anti-fascist war, has blossomed over the years. It is now the closest and the most dynamic among big powers.

President Hu Jintao's attendance at the V-Day celebrations is a clear signal that the relationship between the two is in its best shape ever, and they will work together to deepen ties for mutual interest and world peace and development at large.

As permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, the two countries also closely cooperate under regional and international platforms including the G20, BRIC and Shanghai Co-operation Organization. They have built profound political trust that paves the way for mutual support on issues that concern each other's core interests.

Sino-Russian co-operation on the economic and trade front is also eye-catching. Regardless of the global economic downturn, Sino-Russian trade maintained robust momentum last year and registered 64 percent growth to touch $12 billion in the first quarter this year.

In a world that is facing challenges ranging from climate change to international governance reform, closer Sino-Russian ties will not only benefit the two nations but also contribute to the building of a new political and economic world order favorable to emerging economies and the developing world.
