Olympic committees, athletes against Olympic boycott

Olympic Committee officials from some countries have voiced their opposition to attempts at boycotting the Beijing Olympic Games to be held in August this year.

Cuban Olympic Committee President Jose Ramon Fernandez reiterated Saturday that Cuba rejects any attempts to boycott the Beijing Olympic Games.

Cuba defends China's right to host the Olympics without any pressure from outside, Fernandez said at the 4th Cuban Olympic Games in Havana.

Pal Schmitt, president of the Hungarian Olympic Committee, said boycott is no solution to the problems but will only jeopardize "the world's largest cultural gala."

No boycott has ever managed to fulfill its intentions, he said. The Hungarian Olympic Committee decided unanimously on Saturday to send its athletes to Beijing as planned.

Reza Gharakhanlou, president of the Iranian Olympic Committee, said Iran is opposed to any attempts to boycott the Beijing Olympic Games, noting that Iran will send about 50 athletes to Beijing.

Polish Olympic champion Robert Korzeniowski told Polish media recently that athletes should not be affected by the politicians who called for a boycott of the Beijing games.

"All the athletes should go to the Olympics because our prime task is to win the medals," said Korzeniowski.

Korzeniowski, who has already snatched four Olympic gold medals, pledged his unwavering determination to go to Beijing and try every effort to win gold again.

"We should go to Tibet to see for ourselves what really happened there before we could lead the public in a correct, reasonable manner," he said.

Those who sabotaged the Olympic torch relay should really feel sorry and think about what they have done, he said.
