Cutting a dog's tail has been the most common operation in pet hospitals in China.

Those in favor of the procedure claim this benefits their pets' health, as dogs' tails harbor bacteria.

Animal protectionists rebuff the idea as "very brutal," though vets said it is not a painful procedure for dogs.

A vet surnamed Liu noted most pet operations are unnecessary, and they cause too much pain to the animals.
