On Tuesday, Georgia police defended their decision to handcuff and arrest a 6-year-old elementary school pupil after the school called to report a juvenile had assaulted a principal and was damaging school property, CNN reported.

The officer stated that he tried numerous times to calm the girl down, but she eventually ended up fighting with him.

"The child was then placed in handcuffs for her own safety," said Police Chief Dray Swicord.

However, her family said the police should not have been involved.

"I don't think she misbehaved to the point where she should have been taken to the police department," Johnson's aunt, Candace Ruff said.
