Nirvana, one of China's most famous fitness clubs, resumed operations of its five branches in Beijing Saturday after closing for three days, Xinhua reported. The temporary closing because of late rent payments has sparked concerns about prepaid services and triggered calls to regulate such services. |
More and more clubs or stores in industries such as fitness clubs, beauty salons, barbershops, carwashes and bookstores prefer prepaid services, said Qiu Baochang, director of the Consumer Protection Committee of the Beijing Lawyers Association. "But there are no laws or regulations in China to regulate such businesses requiring prepayments," Qiu said. The BLA has received many complaints about prepaid services when customers did not get their money back after the company closed. Consumer protection associations can only play a role in mediation and has no authority to punish companies. Qiu advised setting up a threshold for entry of business involving prepayment. He also urged such industries to disclose their operation status to their members. |
