| The Taiwan-based Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has invented FlexUPD, short for flexible universal panel for displays, The Wall Street Journal reports. The innovation won the top prize at The Wall Street Journal's 2010 Technology Innovation Awards. It makes it possible to make paper-thin flexible displays that can be produced in commercial quantities. The idea is said to come from watching cooks prepare paper-thin Taiwanese pancakes. ITRI has demonstrated a prototype paper-thin display made with this process. The first product using the technology, a flexible display for an e-reader, is planned for release by the end of the year. |
