The Story
| Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) is a skinny, quirky Viking teenager who has never quite managed to fit in with the hardy warriors of his tribe, which has effectively resulted in a rift between Hiccup and his tough-as-nails father Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler). Hiccup sees an opportunity to repair his fractured relationship with Stoick, who is also the village's leader, by participating in a series of dragon-fighting lessons, although his fellow trainees are far from impressed by his clumsy, uncoordinated demeanor. |

| While blowing off some steam one afternoon, however, Hiccup finds himself face-to-face with an injured dragon and prepares to kill the beast to impress his father. Hiccup, realizing that the dragon means him no harm, instead decides to free the creature, with the young Viking's curiosity eventually drawing him into an unlikely friendship with the dragon (which he appropriately names Toothless). |

Hiccup's ongoing encounters with Toothless provide him with an eye-opening look into the behavior of dragons, which he quickly uses to his advantage to impress his friends and teachers during his training. But when Stoick and the rest of the villagers learn of Hiccup's illicit bond with Toothless, Hiccup must convince everyone that dragons mean humans no harm and that the two species actually share a common enemy.
