Chinese culture 'going abroad'
Adjust font size:

For Chinese culture, "going abroad" is easier said than done.

If the foreign audience wants to appreciate traditional Chinese art works, they need to have some understanding about traditional Chinese culture.

But contemporary art is easily accepted by foreign audiences due to similarities that exist.

But now, some Chinese artists are working on presenting their work to foreign audiences in a way they can appreciate much more easily. The Swiss Culture-Scapes Festival provides China with such a platform.

During the 2010 Culturescape Festival, Chinese artists are trying to expose the audience to Chinese culture through many contemporary art works.

A Swiss audience member said, "As an audience member, I maybe curious about traditional Chinese art, but it is difficult to understand. But for Chinese contemporary art, I can appreciate it much easier."

Promoting Chinese contemporary art works does not mean the traditional art forms will stop developing. But traditional Chinese artists may need to find ways to make their work more acceptable to foreigners.

Zhang Jun, Kunqu opera actor, said, "I try many methods for making the Kunqu Opera more understandable such as combination of Chinese performance skills with western songs. I think the best method is "infiltration", making a good combination of both arts into one work."

Globalization helps people around the world understand each other's culture much faster and easier. But if Chinese culture wants to "go abroad", Chinese artists still need to make efforts.

Cui Yang, general manager of Milky Way Arts & Communications, said, "If you want to make the Chinese Arts really "go abroad", you really need to understand what kind of art can be accepted by the audience abroad. We don't have any problems about performing skills, but we are still have a lot to think about, such as more creative ideas and more accessible expression for Chinese art works."

There are still problems to solve, for presenting Chinese culture to the world. Meanwhile, China may attend more cultural activities for better communication with other countries.
