Indonesia firing squads on Sunday executed three key players of the Bali bombing, six years after the blast that killed over 202 people, local TV and a lawyer said.

The TV One station said Ali Gufron alias Muklas, Amrozi, and Imam Samudra alias Abdul Azis were executed on Nusakambangan island in Central Java province after midnight.

"According to our trusted source, the execution already carried out after midnight," said a reporter of the television from the island.

A lawyer of the bombers, Mahendradata, confirmed the execution.

The execution "is already done, but this information is informal," he told Xinhua in a text message

Indonesian Attorney General Office will give a press conference on this later.

The three bombers, who rejected to beg clemency from the government, had several times lodged appeals since the country's Supreme Court declared them guilty in 2004 over the Bali tragedy. The three also challenged the nation on the method of execution by firing, which they said inhuman.

Indonesia had been hit by a series of major terrorist acts from 2000 to 2005, including the Bali bombings in 2002 and 2005, a hotel explosion in 2003 and the Australian embassy bombing in 2004.

The international militant network of the Jemaah Islamiyah was widely believed behind the deadly strikes.
