Wen to address key UN conference
Adjust font size:

Premier Wen Jiabao will spell out China's post-Olympics development strategy and propose ways to realize goals on global poverty alleviation when he attends a UN development summit in New York next week, a senior Foreign Ministry official said on Friday.

Vice-Foreign Minister He Yafei said Wen will address the Millennium Development Goals summit and attend the general debate of the 63rd UN General Assembly to further outline China's development objectives.

"Wen will elaborate on China's internal and foreign policies and reaffirm that we will resolutely stick to the path of peaceful development, reform, opening and an independent and peaceful foreign policy," He said.

Wen's speech during the UN general debate is expected to convey an important message to the world regarding China's future direction following the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

His address at the high-level dialogue will describe what China has done to realize the Millennium Development Goals.

This will be the first UN conference Wen has attended since taking office in 2003 and is his first major diplomatic engagement since the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Apart from his debut at the UN General Assembly, Wen will take part in nearly 20 other multilateral and bilateral meetings during his 48-hour stay in New York, said the vice-foreign minister.

The premier will also meet foreign leaders, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, overseas Chinese, and the local media during his stay.
