Chinese President Hu Jintao made a five-point proposal on furthering the China-Japan strategic and mutually beneficial relations during a speech at the Waseda University Thursday afternoon.

First, he said, the two countries should strive to enhance mutual strategic trust, which is fundamental for stable relations among countries.

Both as important countries in Asia as well as in the world, China and Japan should make an objective judgment on each other and treat each other as cooperative partner for a win-win result, rather than competitor of a zero-sum game, Hu said.

Efforts should also be made to boost their mutually beneficial cooperation, he said, adding that China and Japan should cherish the sound pattern formed through many years of economic and trade cooperation and give a better play of their mutually complementary economies with huge potentials for cooperation.

The president elaborated on the importance of expanding cultural exchanges, saying that personnel and cultural exchanges serve as bridges and channels for boosting understandings and friendliness between the two peoples.

The president expounded on the need for more coordination and cooperation between the two countries for a more prosperous Asia.

Coordination and cooperation between China and Japan are indispensable for a more prosperous Asia, Hu said. China is willing to work with Japan and other Asian nations to push forward all kinds of regional and sub-regional cooperation, improve common security, safeguard peace and stability in Northeast Asia, promote the process of cooperation and integration in East Asia and achieve the common development of China and Japan through efforts to build a more prosperous Asia, he said.

President Hu also proposed to make joint efforts to deal with global challenges.
