Pakistan's new parliament speaker condemns Tibet riots
Adjust font size:

Pakistan's new parliament speaker Fahmida Mirza on Wednesday condemned the March 14 riots in Lhasa and expressed opposition to any attempts to politicize the Beijing Olympic Games.

Mirza, newly elected speaker of the National Assembly, the country's lower house of parliament, said at a meeting with Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Luo Zhaohui that the Pakistani parliament fully supports the measures China has taken to maintain national unity and social stability.

Pakistan's National Assembly opposes "Tibet independence" and "Taiwan independence", Mirza said.

Lhasa is returning to normal after the March 14 riots, believed to have been organized, premeditated and masterminded by the Dalai clique.

The riots led to the deaths of at least 18 civilians and one police officer.

It also left 382 civilians and 241 police officers injured, with businesses looted, and residences, shops and vehicles burned.
