Attempts using Darfur issue to tarnish Beijing Olympics slashed
Adjust font size:

Chinese government's special representative on Darfur issue Liu Guijin Friday slashed the attempts of a few people to tarnish the Beijing Olympics in the pretext of unrelated political issues.

Liu said, "Such attempts are doomed to failure."

It was in fact "the cold-war mentality" to link politics with the Olympics, an act that was against the basic spirit of the Olympics, said Liu.

He called on those who still "wear colored spectacles" on China to abandon such attempts, which will "not only damage the Olympic spirit, but also do harm to themselves."

China has done a lot of constructive and positive works on Darfur issue, which are recognized by the international community, Liu told reporters in Beijing.

"We are open to and welcome any suggestions or comments on the Olympics, even if it contains misunderstandings, and would like to accept those reasonable elements," Liu said.

He said he talked with some organizations that have different views on the Beijing Olympics and also met with Hollywood director Steven Spielberg when he visited the United States in September, briefing them on China's policy and stance on the Darfur issue.

"But we are firmly opposed to spiteful moves by a few people who attempt to resist and tarnish the Olympics by linking unrelated issues, such as the Darfur issue, " Liu said.

Liu made a four-day visit to Sudan late last month, the fourth since his appointment as an envoy on the Darfur issue in May last year.

During his stay in Sudan, the 62-year-old diplomat flew into South Darfur's capital city Nyala for a one-day visit to assess security and humanitarian situations there. It was his second visit to Darfur as Chinese envoy.

His recent overseas trip also took him to Britain, Chad and France.
