Man held over bus bomb rumor
Adjust font size:

A vegetable seller in east China's Jiangsu Province has been detained after claiming he was responsible for two bus explosions in Kunming.

The man, from central China's Hubei Province, claimed on an Internet forum that he planned to carry out more blasts, and included details of the Kunming attacks.

Internet police in Jiangsu's Yangzhou City traced the man's computer IP address and seized him at his house last Thursday for allegedly spreading rumors about terrorism.

The suspect, who was identified as Wang, said he heard about the blasts in Kunming last Monday and found it was still under investigation.

Wang, 23, from Hubei's Jingshan County, said he decided to fabricate and spread rumors to attract people's attention, said police.

His case will be referred to prosecutors, police added.

People who spread rumors about terrorism may face up to five years in prison, according to Chinese criminal law.

Two fatal bus explosions occurred last Monday in Kunming, capital of southeast China's Yunnan Province.

The explosions occurred on two No. 54 buses during the morning rush hour, killing two people and injuring 14.

Authorities in Kunming have tripled the reward offer to 300,000 yuan (US$43,500) for information that could help to solve the two blasts.

But no helpful information has been received.

Police took victims to the blast sites on Friday in the hope of jogging their memories for useful information.

Among them was Han Xianming, whose fiancee Wang Dezhi was killed in the explosion at Panjiawan bus stop, according to a report by Eastday.com.

Han said he and other injured victims were led onto an empty bus and told to sit down just as they were before the blast, and try to remember people getting on and off the bus.

Police officers took notes of what they said.

Han said his fiancee's last words were: "Give me one yuan change, I can pay the fare later."

He said Wang sat in a seat opposite him after getting on the bus.

Han changed to another seat after its occupant got off. "The explosion went off less than 10 seconds after I sat down," Han recalled.

About 300 police are investigating the bus explosions.
