Australia calls for climate change to be focus in G20 meeting

An Australian environmental think-tank called on Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd on Tuesday to make climate change a focus of the upcoming G20 summit.

"Smart economic stimulus packages and climate change policies can produce double or even triple dividends," Climate Institute chief executive John Connor said in a statement.

Connor said a parliamentary taskforce to develop practical proposals for global climate change negotiations should also be established.

"By taking decisive action at home and abroad, the prime minister can help achieve an effective global climate agreement ... that can grow jobs right now in clean energy and other low carbon industries," Connor said.

According to Connor, dividends included lower carbon pollution, immediate job and economic growth in clean energy and climate friendly industries and lower energy costs.

The next G-20 Leaders' Summit on Financial Markets and the World Economy is scheduled to take place in London on April 2.
