Jakarta to join Earth Hour global campaign
Adjust font size:

The Indonesia's capital of Jakarta will join the "Earth Hour" global campaign by having a power blackout in some parts of the city for one hour on March 28, 2009, Antara News Wire reported Thursday.

The black out will start from 8.30 to 9.30 p.m. Jakarta time.

However, the power blackout would not affect the whole Jakarta, Rizal Malik of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)-Indonesia, said?in Jakarta?on Thursday.

The campaign initiated by WWF International is expected to cover one billion people in 1,000 cities throughout the world this year.

Some 1,539 cities in 80 countries would join the environmental program, he said. Jakarta will be the only Indonesian city to take part in the event.

The Earth Hour program would be a symbolic action to fight the climate change problem by changing the life style towards energy saving, WWF Indonesia's Energy and Climate Program Fitrian Ardiansyah said.

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome's Colosseum, and the Sydney Opera House all stood in darkness.
