A major exhibition of advanced energy saving and green technologies opened in Beijing on October 17.

An annual event since 2006 the exhibition is a showcase and trading platform for enterprises around the world engaged in high-tech innovations and promoting the concept of green living, according to the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform (BMCDR), a principal organizer of the exhibition.

The four-day 2008 China International Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Exhibition is taking place at the Beijing Exhibition Center; admission is free.

"This year's exhibition has more foreign exhibitors than the previous two shows," said Zhang Yanyou of BMCDR.

Among the 203 enterprises taking part, 52 are overseas companies, including eight of the world's top 500 companies such as SIEMENS, DELL and Toshiba.

The technologies and equipment on show cover resource conservation in industry, architecture, communications, and living; new energy, renewable energy, environmental protection, the circular economy, waste disposal, clean production, rural energy technologies and so on.

The exhibition also showcases the achievements of the Chinese government in resource conservation and environmental protection.

Seminars on the themes of new technology and innovation are to be held on 17th and 18th October. Other events include product promotions, government policy briefings and contract signing ceremonies.

China enacted an amended Energy Conservation Law on April 1 and a Circular Economy Promotion Law will come into force on January 1 next year. To attain goals of cutting the energy consumption per unit of GDP by 20 percent and major pollutants emissions by 10 percent between 2006 and 2010, China has been enacting legislation to encourage technical innovation and promote less resource hungry economic development.
