To celebrate the 110th anniversary of its foundation, Peking University has invited China Central Ballet to perform the classic ballet The Red Detachment of Women. The ballet is a milestone as it successfully combines Western ballet with Chinese folk dancing. Staged for the first time in 1964, the ballet was revised for the film of the same title. It is set in the 1930s on Hainan Island, where a woman rejects her depressing life and becomes a solider in the all-women Red Army.

Rhythm and Blues singer David Tao's world tour is headed for Beijing. Born in 1969, Tao released a self-titled debut album. In his second collection, I Am Ok, he defined himself with the R'n'B style, leading audiences back to the rock 'n' roll of the 1970s. His music blends rock, folk, Latin ballads and country music.

China Puppet Theater will offer a feast of puppet shows for the vacations. Magic Vat, Dancing Mouse, Little Ding Dang are some of the plays that will invite audience participation.

The bilingual puppet show Story of 12 Yearly Symbolic Animals is narrated by Mr Magic.

Using humor and imaginative plots, he combines magic, guitar, clowning and cartoon figures in his story-telling.

The Chinese Acrobatics Group, established in 1950, has toured more than 80 countries, won numerous international awards and has helped foster friendships between China and other nations. Its performance includes traditional acrobatics, a circus show, magic, old Beijing folk plays and more. The show blends music, dance, local opera and martial arts.

To commemorate the 150th anniversary of Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini, (1858-1924), a concert has been organized. Puccini's musical works employ the conversational techniques of modern drama. Puccini's operas include The Witches, Edgar, La Boheme and Madame Butterfly. His unfinished Turandot, which is based on a Chinese legend, was finished by Franco Alfano.

United States rock band Incubus will hold its Beijing concert at Star Live Concert Hall. From its first album Fungus Amongus, to Make Yourself, A Crow Left of the Murder and Morning View, the band has won over audiences with its creativity. Its members are lead vocal Brandon Boyd, lead guitar Mike Einziger, drum Jose Pasillas, Keyboard Chris Kilmore and bass Ben Kenney.

Irish cellist William Butt will hold a solo concert in Beijing. Born in London, Butt has cooperated with the Irish National Symphony Orchestra since 2001 and is now a first cellist in the orchestra. His solo album got a world-wide release. Programs include Bach's Cello Suites No 1, Beethoven's Sonata in D Major for Piano and Cello Op 102 No 2, Schumann's Fantasia Op 73, Debussy's Sonata for Cello and Piano in D Minor and Popper Elfentanz's Dance of the Elves.

During the Olympics, six cultural exhibitions will be held at the Confucius Temple, including an introduction to Confucius's life (pictured), the evolution of Beijing's Confucius Temple, the ancient Chinese imperial civil examination system and other items.

Selected works of ink master Hu Peiheng (1992-1962) are on show. In his early years, Hu imitated Ming- and Qing-style ink-and-wash paintings and later learned Western oil techniques under a Belgian artist. Some of his works are elaborately composed, with refined brushstrokes and others are finished with ink and heavy lines.

Cang Xin's Mythology deals with human and universal values through the five Taoist basic elements: Metal, water, wood, fire and soil. These are richly imaginative surrealist images that appeal for ancient order, belief and etiquette.

This exhibition features more than 30 works from a dozen young Chinese painters. They have a variety of themes and approaches and the paintings reflect the artists' perceptions of time and life.

A two-person show by Wang Meng and Feng Yu displays their recent oil paintings. Wang's paintings feature the stillness of lakes, boulders on the shores of Taihu Lake, brick walls, the movements of cicadas and bamboo brushed by a breeze. Feng's works focus on the images of children and cartoon-like images to realize a kind of naivety.

Flying As a Crane, Wan Jun's oil paintings take a bird's-eye view of Tian'anmen, sunflowers, landscapes and dancing girls. He delineates his subject matter with vivid compositions and fluency. Pure color schemes enliven the evanescent atmosphere.

This video work exhibition, entitled Two Fold Faction, includes the works of artists such as Yang Fudong, Michael Bell-Smith, Jonas Dahlberg and others. The Chinese, Danish, German, Swedish and United States artists explore the diversity and possibility of visual art through multi-media forms and installations.

A grand art exhibition is to open at the National Art Museum of China on Sunday in memory of late Chinese premier Zhou Enlai (1898-1976). On display will be books, documents, photos, paintings, prints and sculptures. Also on show are books and paintings Zhou received as gifts from Chinese artists.

The exhibition "reveals that Zhou, a statesman with a refined taste of art, maintained close relations with Chinese artists since the mid-1940s and gave strong support to the development of Chinese art," curator Chen Lusheng says.

Lights of Dunhuang, a massively popular exhibition about the Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes is still on. There are 10 duplicate caves, covered with murals, 120 copies of the murals, created by generations of Chinese researchers/artists. There are also nine authentic clay figurines and wooden sculptures, and 10 ancient manuscripts.
