There are few universities with archaeology departments in China. 1,454 museums and 12 million cultural relics need professionals to protect, repair and look after them.

However, less than ten professionals with Doctors degrees in cultural relic protection in the whole country can't meet urgent demands.

The lack of funds is the other main problem even though the government invests 1 billion yuan or about US$120 million into the sector.

Things are looking up though now as archaeological protection has been listed in the national science and technology plan.
