Forking out on a Feast

Anyone planning eating out this Christmas will find themselves bewildered by the sheer range of options in Beijing this year.

The cost of a Christmas dinner in the city ranges from around 100 yuan (US$12) to a staggering 10,000 yuan (US$1,250) per person.

The most expensive one offered so far in Beijing is a special service provided by the swanky Beijing Hotel, the first five-star hotel in China with a history of more than 50 years.

The exclusive Tanjia Shark's Fin Dinner invites diners to eat like an emperor (or president!) on Christmas Eve. As you might expect, there's a hefty bill to pick up for the privilege of eating in the Presidential Suite.

After a lavish dinner, guests can enjoy a one-night stay in the Presidential Suite. All for just 8,888 yuan (US$1,110).

But it's possible to go one better: fork out 9,888 yuan (US$1,250) and you can rent the Emperor's Suite and have dinner and a one-night stay.

The price includes a free flow of red and white house wine, famous brand beer and soft drinks, a glass of champagne, a Christmas gift and homemade chocolates, a spectacular live show, entertainment and lucky draw.

Tianlun Dynasty Hotel has its own Christmas Eve special. Entrance to its party costs 2,588 yuan (US$323) per person.

Other hotels are trying to outdo one another with novel offers or spectacular shows. Most charge somewhere between 600 yuan (US$75) and 1,588 yuan (US$196) per person.
