China's largest tapestry, 27 meters long and 6.65 meters high, was recently woven in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, designer and manufacturer Wang Guoli said Wednesday.
The tapestry is a replica of the Jiulongbi (Nine-dragon screen wall) in Beihai Park in Beijing. The wall, located on the northern bank of the lake in the park, shows nine dragons among billowing clouds and waves.
Wang said he loves Chinese traditional culture very much, so he decided to make the wall a tapestry.
A group of 31 weavers spent one year and one day weaving the artwork which is as large as the original building, said Wang, also manager of Inner Mongolia Liwang Artwork Co., Ltd.
From March 6, 2002 to March 7, 2003, the weavers worked day and night, using more than 500 kinds of colored yarn. Usually, 200 to 300 kinds are used in one tapestry, said Wang.
Now, potential buyers are contacting Wang, but Wang is also considering other options for the artwork, such as donating it to a museum.
