It's the first weekend since Beijing's removal from the WHO's list of SARS affected areas. Retail stores have done slow business over the last two months, but they are now preparing for an onslaught as pent up consumption urges drive shoppers and tourists back to the retail palaces.
People in Beijing have waited for too long for this moment, not only the business owners, but also the consumers. The ceremony at the downtown Wangfujing street is the first of many promotional activities at shopping malls and restaurants cityㄜwide since the height of the SARS epidemic.
Liang Wei, director with Beijing Commerce Committee, said, The activity, organized by the municipal Commerce Committee, is warmly welcomed by businesspeople citywide. They have been actively preparing for it. We hope to attract consumers and stimulate consumption by offering large discounts and a good shopping environment.
It's the first time in nearly 3 months that Beijing's shops have witnessed so many people. Even though it is raining from time to time, the onceㄜempty streets are packed with people.
A consumer said, It's the first time I have gone shopping since SARS. I can't wait anymore. I have just bought shoes. My girlfriend and I will eat out, and after that go to Karaoke to release ourselves.
More than 10 large shopping malls throughout Beijing, and more than 1,000 openㄜair markets are cooperating to offer discounts, lucky draws, and entertainment. All kinds of promotional methods are being applied to stimulate consumers to take out their money. Opening hours for most shops have been extended to 12 midnight. And consumers are taking full advantage of the extra time.
It's almost midnight, yet the shopping malls are still crowded. Flashing lights, happy crowds and busy shops, all suggest SARS is on its way out and life is returning to this dynamic city.
