A cold air mass moving into Shanghai from Siberia will see temperatures plummet today from yesterday's high of 24.6 degrees Celsius to a high of just 16 degrees, according to local meteorologists.
The Shanghai Municipal Meteorological Bureau said temperatures could continues to drop until Sunday.
Tomorrow's high should stick around 16 degrees but the low could drop down 6 degrees with frost in suburban areas in the morning.
The Siberian air mass will also bring strong winds to the city, with wind speeds rising to force 5 to 6 (29 to 49 kilometers per hour) today, up from force 3 to 4 (12 to 28 kilometers per hour) yesterday.
A high pressure system will still control city weather over the weekend, meaning lots of sunshine, according to the bureau.
Temperature should rebound on Sunday with a high of 20 degrees and a low of 9 degrees.
Yesterday marked the official start of winter according to the lunar calendar. Local meteorologists, however, don't consider winter to have arrived until the city sees five consecutive days with average daily temperatures below 10 degrees, something they don't expect to happen in the near future.
