Hot weather may return on Wednesday after Shanghai residents enjoyed a cool weekend, Youth Daily reported today.

The mercury dropped to 33.1 degrees Celsius in the downtown area over the weekend with a low of 25.5 degrees yesterday, which was the lowest in the past 27 days.

A meteorological expert said the city will experience a period of heat starting on Wednesday with the temperature rising back to 35 degrees, but the chance of the mercury returning to 37 degrees is slim.

Rain will hit parts of the city today and tomorrow, especially in Jiading, Qingpu, Songjiang and Jinshan districts.

No tropical storms have formed recently, but the city may be affected by a typhoon or tropical storm in September, though the city has rarely been affected by them this year, at least until now.
