China Sets Six Goals for 'Red Tourism'

Six major goals for Red Tourism are set to develop nation's red tourism.

The General Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the General Office of the State Council set six major goals for the "red tourism" in their guidelines for the development of the nation's "red tourism" from 2004 to 2010 published at the end of last year.

The six goals are:

Speed up "red tourism" and make it an important frontier for education on patriotism. The number of tourists to revolutionary bases will rise 15 percent during 2004 and 2007 and 18 percent during 2008 to 2010.

Develop 12 key tourist areas to be popular both at home and abroad featuring outstanding themes, easy access, package services and strong appeal.

Improve 30 "select traveling routes" to make them popular and mature tourist spotlights with high adaptation and selectivity, and closely integrated with other tourist programs.

Cultivate about 100 "classic red tourist areas", 80 percent of which are to reach 3A level, including 40 percent at 4A level. 50 tourist areas are aimed to receive annually 500, 000 person-times by 2007; by 2010, the number of such areas is expected to reach 80.

The excavation, protection, exhibition and publicity of key revolutionary, historical and cultural heritages is to reach world advanced level. National key units for cultural relics protection are to be generally repaired within planning period.

Realize "red tourism" industry and make it a superior industry driving old revolutionary bases in their development. Two million jobs will have been created directly and 10 million indirectly through "red tourism", which will see a total revenue of 100 billion yuan by the year 2010.
