After heated debate over approval procedures for the layout and design of city zoos, officials have announced that the Beijing Zoo will seek public council and publicize all results to help improve efficiency and streamline designs.
Meanwhile, the public will have a say in making important decisions, such as moving the Beijing Zoo to a new site.
The change represents an important shift in the administration of city zoos.
Originally, the design and layout of zoos was submitted to administrative departments and was not made public.
In addition, the revised version prohibits any individual or work unit to set up stalls within zoo facilities. Those who violate the rule will be fined up to 1,000 yuan, or about US$120.
