Last petition against Musharraf dismissed
Adjust font size:

The Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan on Thursday dismissed the last petition against President Pervez Musharraf's reelection, local TV channel DAWN NEWS reported.

A full court of SC validated Musharraf's reelection through its ruling, the DAWN NEWS report said.

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed five among six petitions challenging Musharraf's qualification to contest the presidential elections, leaving only one to be heard on Thursday.

"The petition is dismissed," Chief Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar said in a brief remark while heading a 10-member full court of the Supreme Court. All the judges left the courtroom after the short order.

Musharraf gained a crushing victory in the presidential elections on Oct. 6. However, the Supreme Court on Oct. 5 barred the Election Commission from issuing an official notification of the result before a final verdict was given on petitions challenging Musharraf's presidential candidacy.

Musharraf might resign as the army chief by the weekend if the Supreme Court gave a final verdict on Thursday or Friday, Attorney General Malik Muhammad Qayyum said on Wednesday.

Musharraf has insisted that he will take oath as a civilian president for next five-year term.
