Explosion kills 7 in Pakistan
Adjust font size:

Three policemen were among seven persons killed in a suicide attack near the army house in the eastern Pakistani city of Rawalpindi Tuesday, Interior Ministry spokesman Javed Iqbal Cheema said.

He said at a press briefing that the death toll in the blast has reached to seven, including three policemen. The head of suicide attacker has been found, which was of a fair color man between 19 to 23 years old, he added.

He said that attaching suicide attacks with the Lal Masjid (Red Mosque) incident was incorrect. "The police were the target in the Rawalpindi attack," he added.

Earlier, Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said that the government had recently received information that suicide bombers had entered Islamabad and Rawalpindi, adding that they might be behind the blast.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The security was tightened in the capital Islamabad and Rawalpindi after the blast.

Meanwhile, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf was presiding over a high-level meeting Tuesday in the army house, where his residence is situated, according to local press reports.

Provincial governors, chief ministers and other top officials are attending the meeting at the presidential camp office.

Law and order, upcoming general elections, and the caretaker setup are issues under discussion in the meeting, said the reports.
