China: Myanmar issue should be resolved by itself
Adjust font size:

China on Friday responded to a UN Security Council presidential statement on Myanmar and said the Myanmar issue should be resolved with the efforts of Myanmar's government and people and through consultation.

"The Myanmar issue should be fundamentally and properly resolved with the efforts of Myanmar's government and people themselves and through consultation," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao when responding to press.

"China is ready to continue to actively promote the proper settlement of the Myanmar issue together with the international community," Liu added.

He said the UN Security Council's adoption of the presidential statement was aimed at supporting the mediation efforts of the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and his special adviser Ibrahim Gambari, and provided constructive help to all concerned parties of Myanmar to realize reconciliation and promote democracy and development in Myanmar through dialogue.

The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a presidential statement on Myanmar Thursday, calling for efforts to achieve "an inclusive national reconciliation" in the country.

The 15-nation body called on the government of Myanmar and all other parties concerned to work together to realize domestic reconciliation and to boost democracy and development through dialogue, said the statement read out by Ghana's UN Ambassador Leslie Christian, the council's president for October.
