Sudan Says It Wins Arab Support on Darfur Issue
Adjust font size:  ZoomIn ZoomOut

The Sudanese government announced Thursday that it had won the support of all the other Arab states for its position on the Darfur issue.

The remarks were made by Sudanese State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ali Ahmed Karti, who is currently in Cairo to take part in a foreign ministers meeting of the Arab League, reported the Sudanese News Agency.

Karti was quoted as saying that there was an Arab unanimous stance crystallized in the Arab foreign ministers meeting to reject any foreign intervention in Darfur without consent of the Sudanese government.

The meeting had taken specific decisions to support Sudan politically and materially to face the situation in Darfur, he added.

The Sudanese official said that the Arab foreign ministers called on the parties which had not signed the Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA), reached between the Sudanese government and some rebel factions in the Nigerian capital Abuja on May 5, to join the peace process.

The Arab countries also promised to provide the necessary commitments for the African Union (AU) forces to continue their mission of monitoring a fragile cease-fire in Darfur, said Karti.

He pointed out that AL Secretary General Amr Moussa was expected to make important activities in the coming period at regional and international levels to strengthen the support for the AU forces in Darfur and urge the Arab countries to fulfill their commitments for backing these troops in accordance with the resolutions adopted by the AL summit in Khartoum earlier this year.
