China Ready to Build Stronger Ties with Canada

China is ready to work with Canada to chart new territories of growth and development and build stronger and more dynamic bilateral relations in the years to come, China's Ambassador Lu Shumin said on Wednesday.

Lu made the remarks when delivering a speech at the National Press Club's Newsmaker Lunch to mark the 35th anniversary of Canada-China diplomatic relations.

Describing the bilateral relations between Canada and China as "dynamic, extensive and multi-faceted," Lu quoted the Confucius saying, "When you reach the age of 30, you reach maturity," following a brief review of the rapid development of the bilateral relations.

"I think this remark also aptly describes the evolution of China-Canada relations that have entered its 35th year. It is a time to assess past progress and look ahead for future achievement." Lu said.

"Thanks to the joint efforts, the relationship entered a golden period in recent years, featuring frequent mutual visits among leaders of both countries, dynamic parliamentary exchanges, increased trade, flourishing cultural events and close cooperation on the international affairs," Lu said.

Lu attached great significance to the agreement of Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin and President Hu Jintao that the bilateral relations would be upgraded to a strategic partnership.

"Cultivating an all-round cooperation through a strategic partnership contributes to the steady growth of our relationship, and as well peace, stability and prosperity of Asian Pacific region and the world at large," Lu said.

Responding to a question concerning the Bill C-357, an act moved by a member of House of Commons that calls for enhancement of Canada's relationship with Taiwan, the ambassador warned that "the consequences would be serious if the political base of Canada-China relations be destroyed."

According to Chinese statistics, two-way trade increased over 100 times from US$150 million in the early days of China-Canada diplomatic relations to US$15.5 billion in 2004. And the two countries have agreed to bring bilateral trade volume to over US$30 billion by 2010.
