Li, Annan Hope for Progress of UN Reform

Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing and UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan Wednesday extended their common hope that the reform of the United Nations can make progress.

Li, who met Annan during an interim break of the International Conference on Iraq held in Brussels, said China supports the reform of the United Nations in a bid to strengthen the authority and role of the world body so as to better resolve problems all around the globe.

The reform should be done with full coordination and comprehensive consensus in accordance to the principle of democratization of international relations, Li said.

The Chinese foreign minister also urged relevant parties to make better preparations for the UN global summit scheduled to be held in September in order to get a "positive outcome" from the summit.

Annan expressed his hopes that all UN member states would seek comprehensive consensus after full discussions, so as to make progress for the reform of the United Nations.

The UN chief also hoped that the UN global summit would be successful after the efforts of various parties.

On the Iraqi issue, Li said China upholds that the United Nations should play an important role in the reconstruction of the war-torn country.

He promised that China will continue to join hands with the international community to make its contribution in promoting Iraq's reconstruction process.
