Hu Urges Dialogue Between China, Japan

President Hu Jintao met with the secretary-generals of Japan's two ruling parties in Beijing Sunday, and called on both sides to work for the long-term healthy and stable development of bilateral relations.

Strengthening dialogue and communication between the ruling parties of the two countries has a positive impact on improving and promoting China-Japan relations when the two countries face difficulties in their ties, Hu stressed during the meeting with Tsutomu Takebe of the Liberal Democratic Party and Tetsuzo Fuyushiba of the New Komeito Party.

Hu also serves as general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.

"Both the CPC and the Chinese government attach great importance to China-Japan relations and sincerely hope that the two countries can coexist peacefully, be friends from generation to generation and conduct mutually-beneficial cooperation for common development," he said.

"China-Japan relations can progress healthily and steadily in the long run as long as the two countries handle their relations from a strategic and long-term point of view, strictly abide by the principles and spirit of the three Sino-Japanese political documents, including the Sino-Japanese Joint Statement, adhere to the principle of taking history as a mirror and looking into the future, properly handle the issues concerning history and Taiwan, solve differences through dialogue and consultation, expand mutually-beneficial cooperation in all fields, and continue to strengthen the political, economic and social foundations of bilateral relations," said Hu.

Takebe said the healthy development of Japan-China relations would not only benefit the two nations, but also help maintain peace and stability in Asia and the world at large.

On Saturday, State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan said in Beijing that China and Japan should take specific steps to implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries. Hu initiated a five-point proposal on developing Sino-Japanese relations during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi in Jakarta.

The proposal is of practical significance and far-reaching historic importance, Tang said while meeting Takebe and Fuyushiba.
