Top Legislator Meets Singapore PM

Top legislator Wu Bangguo met with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Wednesday and they pledged efforts to give fresh impetus to the development of bilateral relations.

Wu, chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, had a detailed discussion with Lee on bilateral ties and other issues of common concern and they reached consensus on important issues.

China-Singapore relations have grown rapidly in the past 10 years and bilateral cooperation has been fruitful in many areas, Lee said, adding that cooperation between the enterprises of the two countries is on the upswing, which brings about benefit for both sides.

Wu, who is in Singapore on an official good-will visit, said political mutual trust is the important foundation for the development of Sino-Singapore relations and that mutually beneficial cooperation is the strong driving force behind the growth in bilateral ties.

Wu said the aim of his current visit is to provide fresh impetus to the comprehensive development of China-Singapore ties.

The frequent exchanges of visits between top leaders of the two countries should be maintained to enhance mutual trust and broaden consensus and relations between the NPC and Singapore's parliament should be further strengthened, he said.

He said efforts should be made, through the Forum on China-Singapore Economic and Trade Cooperation, to enhance exchanges and cooperation between enterprises of the two countries and seek a new growth engine for economic and trade cooperation, so as to bring bilateral trade and economic ties to a new height.

Wu added that consultation and coordination between the two countries should be strengthened in regional and international affairs.

Lee said there is wide scope for strengthening bilateral cooperation in many fields. He said he is looking forward to visiting China in October and hopes that his itinerary would include the Northeast of China.

Wu said his visit to Singapore has been fruitful. In his talks and conversation with Singapore leaders, consensus was reached on a wide range of issues, he said, adding that he was deeply impressed by both sides' strong desire to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation.
