The museum was completed and officially opened to the public on May 27. Situated in the beautiful west campus of Peking University, it is the first of its kind to be established in China's institutions of higher learning.
In 1986, the construction of the museum was started by digging for the foundation with the investment of Mr. Sackler, who is a medical doctor, a famous collector and a philanthropist. He loves Chinese cultures and makes great contributions to the cause of protecting and developing Chinese cultural relics.
The exhibitions are divided into basic displays and temporary exhibitions. The former is arranged chronologically into seven periods: Paleolithic Age, Neolithic Age, Xia Shang Zhou Dynasties, the Period of Warring States, Qin Han Dynasties, Three kingdoms, Double Jin Dynasties, South and North Dynasties, Sui Tang Dynasties, and Song Liao Jin Yuan Ming Dynasties. In addition, the museum holds an annual special exhibition which mostly gives instructions to the major archeological findings in recent years.
