China's Transportation Sectors Step up Anti-SARS Efforts
The national railway, road and maritime transportation sectors are stepping up efforts in the fight against the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

At one of Beijing's two major passenger railway stations, the Beijing West Railway Station, posters and photos on SARS prevention can be seen everywhere, notifying passengers about how to protect themselves from the threat of SARS.

Guo Qifu, deputy director of the station, Wednesday said a special office for epidemic prevention has been set up in the station, in addition to a SARS monitoring group headed by station leaders.

The office will collect relevant SARS information and report SARS cases found at the station, which handles about 50,000 passengers daily, Guo said.

Guo said the station has also strengthened sanitation and sterilization work and done its utmost to ensure the health of all passengers and station staff.

The Ministry of Communications Wednesday also issued a notice to national road construction sites urging further sanitation and sterilization measures.

All workers at these sites should be well-informed about SARS and about relevant preventive measures, said the ministry.

Workers' movements should also be registered in a timely manner.

The administrative shipping sector of the Yangtze River has also drafted an emergency response plan for potential SARS cases, and local medical and epidemic prevention agencies have also made preparations for emergency SARS treatment.
