In 1985, a further step was taken in rural reform. The state abolished the traditional practice of state monopoly on the purchase of agricultural and sideline products, and started to purchase such products through contract and on the open market. The new policy gave an impetus to the development of a planned commodity economy in rural areas. Shown here is a booming rural market in the Zhujiang River Delta area, Guangdong Province.
