US Public Support for Iraq War Falls to New Low
Adjust font size:  ZoomIn ZoomOut

Two-thirds of Americans are opposed to the Iraq war, while only about 30 percent say they favor it, the lowest level of support on record, a new poll result released by CNN Wednesday said.

Opposition to the war has remained nearly unanimous among Democrats over the last four months -- more than 90 percent opposed. About two-thirds of independents have also held steady against the war, according to the new CNN-Opinion Research Corporation poll.

Anti-war sentiment among Republican poll respondents has suddenly increased with 38 percent of Republicans now saying they oppose the war.

The poll found that 63 percent of Americans are ready to withdraw at least some US troops from Iraq, and 42 percent of Republicans agree. Fifty-four percent of Americans do not believe US action in Iraq is morally justified.

More than two months before the Bush administration is to make an assessment of the situation in Iraq, particularly about how the president's troop buildup this year has helped restore security in the country, the American public is also making its judgment, according to the poll.

Sixty-nine percent of those polled believe things are going badly in Iraq, while only 17 percent think the situation is improving.

The poll of 1,029 adult Americans was conducted last Friday through Sunday, and its margin of sampling error was plus-or-minus three percentage points.
