HK Government Accepts Recommendations on Higher Education Review
Chairman of the Hong Kong University Grants Committee (UGC) Alice Lam announced on Wednesday the HK government's final decision to accept the UGC's final recommendations on higher education review.

The higher education review recommendations have set a clear strategic direction for the further development of higher education in Hong Kong with an aim to encourage diversity in the sector, promote performance and collaboration among the universities, and provide assured articulation opportunities for students with sub-degree or other qualifications.

Law noted that the UGC plans to implement the recommendations, especially those involving modification of the funding methodology, in the next triennium.

"I am glad that the Administration has accepted the UGC's suggestion to roll-over the current triennium for one year to cover the 2004-2005 academic year, thereby postponing the next triennium to 2005/06 - 2007/08. This will allow the UGC more time to work out implementation details in consultation with parties concerned," Lam said.

Chairman of the Education Commission (EC) Rosanna Wong Yick-ming echoed Law's pleasure at the government's decision on the higher education review.

"I note that following a comprehensive public consultation exercise and taking into account the community's concerns and comments, the UGC has submitted its final recommendations on the higher education review to the government. I am pleased that the government has accepted almost completely the UGC's final recommendations," Wong said.

Wong maintained that the review has far-reaching impact on the future development of higher education in Hong Kong since the implementation of the recommendations will surely help to enhance the quality of Hong Kong's younger generations, so as to establish a solid base of talent and skills enabling Hong Kong to rise to future challenges.
