Makonde woodcarving, a style of modern African art, went on display in the National Art Museum of China Monday.
The Makonde are one of the five major tribes in Tanzania who originally migrated north from Mozambique to the southern Tanzanian highlands. They are internationally famous for their intricate carvings, which are based on Life, Love, Good and Evil and reflect their beliefs about the origins of man.
Some of the works in the show represent local totems, while others are shaped like clouds. There are also carving clusters and tools.
The 157 pieces on display were contributed by a Chinese entrepreneur couple, Li Songshan and Han Rong, who live in Tanzania.
