The Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture is popularly known as the birthplace of King Gesar. In keeping with that tradition, a grand celebration got underway this week there to remember this ancient hero and his ancient legend.
For centuries, Tibetans have gathered to honor King Gesar at the turn of every summer and autumn. This year's celebration corresponds with the First Gesar Cultural Festival. Tens of thousands of people came to Dege County from far and near to enjoy the singing and dancing.
The legend of King Gesar dates back to the 11th century. Since then, the noble warrior has been regarded as a symbol of Tibetan culture.
For Tibetan people, the festival is also a rare occasion to display their finest traditional garments.
More revelers are expected to arrive over the days to come.
