An amendment to the Constitution of the Communist Party of China (CPC) was passed at the Seventh Plenary Session of the 16th CPC Central Committee that closed in Beijing Friday.

Wu Bangguo, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, elaborated the draft amendment at the meeting, according to the communique released after the plenum.

But the document did not release the details of the amendment.

The Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee worked out the draft amendment to the Party Constitution on September 17, saying that it will reflect the major strategic thoughts the present CPC Central Committee has set forth since 2002, such as the scientific concept of development.

The plenum also approved a report to be submitted to the upcoming 17th Party Congress by the 16th CPC Central Committee.

Both documents will be submitted to the 17th Party Congress, scheduled to open on October 15.

The latest amendment to the Party Constitution was made at the 16th CPC Congress in November 2002, when the important thoughts of "Three Represents" were highly appraised and written into the Constitution.

At the 15th CPC Congress in 1997, Deng Xiaoping Theory was added into the Party Constitution as the guiding theory for the CPC to stand next to Marxism-Leninism and Mao Zedong Thought. And the theory on building of socialism with Chinese Characteristics was enshrined in the Party Constitution at the 14th CPC Congress in 1992.
