Harmony Between the Upper and the Lower
The upper and the lower, in traditional Chinese society, referred to the monarch and his subjects, or the superior and the subordinate. Harmony between the upper and the lower is a description of the harmony between people at different hierarchical levels. This kind of interpersonal harmony was mainly achieved through moral education implemented by the ancient rulers, epitomizing orderly governance and expressing the ancients' yearning for a better society.

上、下，在中國傳統(tǒng)社會中就是君和臣，即上級和下級。上下和合是對于不同層級之間人們和睦相處狀態(tài)的一種描述。這種人際和諧的狀態(tài)，通過古代統(tǒng)治者的道德教化而達成，體現(xiàn)了一種良好的統(tǒng)治秩序，表達了古人對和諧美好社會的向往。
