聯合國千年發展目標
新千年開始之際，全世界的領導人在聯合國制定了一份廣泛的愿景，旨在從多個方面著手抗擊貧困。這一愿景轉化為8個千年發展目標，成為在新千年最初的15年中全世界的總體發展框架。
8項目標包括：（1）消滅極端貧窮和饑餓；（2）實現普及初等教育；（3）促進兩性平等并賦予婦女權力；（4）降低兒童死亡率；（5）改善產婦保健；（6）與艾滋病、瘧疾和其他疾病作斗爭；（7）確保環境的可持續能力；（8）制訂促進發展的全球伙伴關系。
經過中國政府、社會各界、貧困地區廣大干部群眾共同努力以及國際社會積極幫助，中國7億多農村貧困人口擺脫貧困。2015年，聯合國千年發展目標在中國基本實現。中國是全球最早實現千年發展目標中減貧目標的發展中國家，為全球減貧事業作出了重大貢獻。
Millennium Development Goals
At the start of this millennium, world leaders framed a wide-ranging vision at the United Nations, which was formulated as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), to be fulfilled by 2015.
There were eight goals:
(1) Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger;
(2) Achieve universal primary education;
(3) Promote gender equality and empower women;
(4) Reduce child mortality;
(5) Improve maternal health;
(6) Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases;
(7) Ensure environmental sustainability; and
(8) Develop a global partnership for development.
With concerted efforts on the part of the Chinese government, social sectors and people in impoverished regions, and the international community, more than 70 million rural Chinese have been lifted out of poverty. By 2015, China had largely fulfilled the MDGs, becoming the first developing country to hit the target of reducing poverty ahead of the 2015 deadline and making an impressive contribution to global poverty reduction.
