The spirit of the scholars at Mogao Grottoes
The Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang, Gansu Province, are a treasure house of ancient Chinese culture and arts – the country's biggest and richest collection of artistic relics. In 1944 the National Dunhuang Art Institute was founded, and in 1987 the Mogao Grottoes were placed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Dunhuang is an area in the desert in northwest China characterized by extremely harsh conditions. For decades, generations of scholars have devoted themselves to the preservation, research and development of the cultural relics there. They have displayed a noble spirit of dedication and innovation.
Xi Jinping visited the Dunhuang Academy in August 2019 and spoke highly of the spirit of the scholars. He said that the Dunhuang culture is both a witness to and a product of the exchanges of various civilizations down the centuries, and the preservation of cultural relics and associated research have produced results of great significance. He encouraged the scholars to continue their Dunhuang studies.
