Top Artists to Stage Verdi Classic

The Shanghai Grand Theatre with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and Committee of 100 Cultural Institute will mark the 100th anniversary of Guiseppe Verdi's death on August 31 with from Don Carlos.

The opera, which dramatizes the ill-fated love affair between the Infante of Spain and Elisabetta de Valois of France, premiered in Paris in 1867. This will be the first time it has been performed in China.

Grammy award-winning US conductor John Nelson's recent engagements include Handel's Giulio Cesare with the Metropolitan Opera and Alcina with the Chicago Lyric Opera. He was recently appointed music director of Ensemble Orchester de Paris.

Tian Haojiang (bass) has earned widespread recognition as a basso cantante since his Metropolitan Opera debut during the 1991-92 season. He has appeared every season at the Metropolitan, singing over 15 roles. Recent engagements include principal roles in El Cid with Placido Domingo at the Washington Opera.

Among the other artists are Veronica Villarroel (soprano), who opened the last Metropolitan Opera season opposite Placido Domingo, Keith Ikaia Purdy (tenor) of the Vienna State Opera, Marianne Cornetti (mezzo), who recently performed at La Scala, Robert Gary Simpson (baritone) of Opera Montreal, and John Cheek (bass) of the Metropolitan Opera.

The performance will take place during the second Shanghai Master Class 2001 by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music Zhou Xiaoyan Opera Center.

This program, in its second year, is authorized by the Shanghai Municipal Government and the Ministry of Culture and is supported by the Maecenas Foundation with assistance from the Shanghai Grand Theatre, the international Vocal Arts Institute, the Committee of 100 Cultural Institute and the Asian Performing Arts Council.

The three-week workshop involves 10 opera coaches led by Joan Dorneman of the Metropolitan Opera training 50 young opera singers and 100 voice teachers.
