Central Bank to Prosecute Fake Bank Notes

Sources from the People's Bank of China, the country's central bank, said Wednesday that government departments concerned will jointly launch a nationwide campaign against crimes related to forged bank note this year.

A bank spokesman said the State Council's anti-counterfeit note joint conference convened a special meeting this week on cracking down on crimes related to the forging of bank note and the trafficking of it. Departments concerned are urged to strike hard on such crimes in a bid to protect people's cardinal interests.

He said that the meeting is important in rectifying the financial order and preventing financial risks, and serves as an overall mobilization for carrying out the special fight in areas where the forging of bank note and the trafficking of it are prevalent.

Shi Jiliang, head of the joint conference and vice-governor of the central bank, said that in recent years the amount of counterfeit Renminbi has been increasing. Between April and September last year, a total of 470 million yuan (about 57 million US dollars) worth of counterfeit money was seized, 3,562 cases were cracked and more than 10,000 criminal suspects were arrested.

He said that the meeting calls on all related departments to reinforce their efforts and cooperate more closely to carry out the special fight against counterfeit money.
